That pesky CHECK ENGINE LIGHT

When that Check Engine Light or Service Engine Soon Light comes on, you have now entered into the Big Leagues. This is one of the few areas in Automotive Repair that if a qualified technician is not the one dealing with this problem, money will fly from your pocket with little, or no results. We are now dealing with a computer, not unlike the one you are using right now to read this web page. Using a code reader from the various "FREE CHECK ENGINE DIAGNOSIS" places is an invitation for trouble. Obtaining the "CODE"(or DTC - Diagnostic Trouble Code) is only the first of many steps that needs to be taken to properly diagnose and repair "The Reason Why The Code Is Set". Your vehicle's computer: PCM - Powertrain Control Module, or ECM - Electronic Control Module works with input and output signals to and from various, modules, sensors, actuators, etc and is programed for those signals to be within certain parameters and once outside of those parameters for a given length of time the Check Engine Light, or Service Engine Soon Light will come on and there are literally hundreds of scenarios relating to hundreds of Diagnostic Trouble Codes.

Here are just a couple of very common Check Engine Light mis-diagnosis examples that I see frequently:

DTC – P0131 = H02S circuit low voltage sensor 1 Which is referring to an Oxygen Sensor, but the sensor itself very likely is not the reason the code was set and the light turned on, but something else causing the sensor to report only a low voltage signal back to the PCM.
DTC – P0401 = EGR System Flow Insufficient This refers to the EGR Valve, but the valve itself is most likely not the cause of the insufficient gas exhaust flow.

These are just a few examples of the in depth diagnoses that I perform to provide the most comprehensive service to you at affordable prices.
